November update and Pack Meeting
Greetings, Scouts and Scouters.
I hope you and your families are doing well. Personally, it's been a tough few weeks, but the holidays are upon us, and that always brings cheer, even in the midst of tragedy.
We had an awesome time at Webelos Woods. We earned more awards, and did our first overnight campout with the Webelos. And for the first time in pack history - 100% attendance. You should all be proud.
So, it's about time for another pack meeting. I'm looking forward to seeing what you've all been up to. Our next meeting will be November 30th at the school, 7:00 as usual. See you there.
Next month, we'll be hanging out with the residents at Atria Del Rey. Tentatively scheduled for Monday, Dec 14th. I haven't been able to confirm the date yet, but I'll let you all know as soon as I do.
For now, eat lots of turkey. Have a happy Thanksgiving.

October Pack Meeting
Hey Guys
This is a reminder that our next Pack meeting is Monday, October 26th, 7:00 at the Hermosa School Media Center. See you there.
Webelos - I have the sign up package for Webelos Woods next month. For parents that were wondering, packs need to bring their own tents, food, and water, and camping equipment. I have some stuff that we can use. We're camping in a field, and each Pack gets it's own space. We'll talk at the next Den Meeting, but if you want to go, let me know this week.
Later.

Potato Vine
Greetings, guys.
Well, almost half of our pack was been at day camp all week. So far Caleb has earned belt loops for BB guns, Archery, Music, Volleyball, Soccer, and Ultimate Frizbee, a pin for Archery and BB guns, and the Forster and Showman activity badge. So if you didn't go this year, do everything you can to be there next year.
Okay - my plant for this week is something called Potato Vine. I saw this in the canyon at the top of Hermosa, in my friend's back yard, and all over the place in Big Sur. Angie finally figured out what it was, but it's been bugging me because I couldn't find it in any of my references, or any of the references I checked on vacation. The reason it was bothering me is because it has really cool berries on them, and I wanted to know if I could eat them. Nope - the whole plant is toxic. So, if you see this one, DONT EAT IT.

Have a good week. See you all soon.

Well, I went on vacation with my family last week. We started our vacation by hiking to the top of Mount Baden-Powell. This is a really tough hike, but we all made it, so we should be getting some Broken Arrow awards soon. Then we went to Big Sur in central California. We had a good time exploring the local trails, took a tour of the Big Sur Lightstation, and we caught crawdads. Josh and I ate some of the crawdads. Very yummie.

So here is the 3rd plant for you. this is called Monkey Flower. It grows all over California, and there are several different varieties - I don't know exactly which one this is. There is nothing special about this plant (that I know of), I just think it's pretty. It is also easy to identify in the wild. It has skinny leaves, and usually grows in places where you wouldn't expect to see flowers - like on the side of rock cliffs or in dry dirt areas.
That's what I have for this week. More is coming...
Keep on enjoying summer. Keep doing your best, even at relaxing.

Hey Scouts! I hope your summer is going well.
The district is planning on doing a huge recruitment in the Fall, so when you go back to school, keep your eyes open for fliers and you can do your part to get your friends to join Scouts. Also keep checking the blog so you know when our next pack meeting will be.
Okay, here the second installment of my summer project for you guys. For you first year Webelos, if you remember these plants, you'll get a head start on your Naturalist activity badge.
This week's plant is Currant Berry. These plants grow wild in our mountains, especially in the foothill areas. You can identify it easily by the leaf - it kind of looks like a fan. The berries are usually ripe late in the spring, but if the animals get to them first, you might not see them. If you do, they are green when they first form, then they turn pink, then purple. Early in the spring, the plant has pretty pink flowers on it. You can eat the berries, and they taste really good. But until you can identify it with absolute certainty, don't just start eating every purple berry you find. Remember, "when in doubt, do without."
All right, troops. We'll have more next week.

It's Friday, June 5th, and I'm getting ready to go rafting with the Boy Scouts. I'm really looking forward to this weekend.
So I promised something cool for the summer, and I decided to start it today. A couple of weeks ago, my family went for a short hike at the top of Hermosa. We found a lot of cool thing along the trail, including a waterfall, a paintball range, a rattle snake that we almost stepped on, and a lot of different plants. I thought it was cool to have such neat things so close to our homes.
For the summer, I will be posting things from this hike for you guys to learn about. The Webelos have to learn different plants for their achievements, and the other dens can benefit from knowing these things, too.
The first thing I wanted to show you was a plant called Stinging Nettle. It's called that because it really does sting if you get it on your skin. Look at the picture below. Do you see those little hairs? Each one of those is like a little needle with a stinging oil on it. When it gets on your skin, it stings, then make a little blister, then burns, and eventually goes away. . . after 4 hours. Here's the catcher - you can eat them! If you find young shoots and boil them a few times, you can eat them like spinach. The stems also have a very strong fiber that can be used to make rope. So it's a cool plant, if you respect it.
That's it for this week. Check back later to see what's next.

Okay, so I've been slacking. May was our Pine Car Derby, and we learned that even though the equations indicate heavier cars should have an advantage, the 5 oz cars were consistently faster than the 6 oz card. Hmmm?
Our next pack meeting is going to be at Hermosa Park on June 8th. We'll start gathering at 6:00 for pizza and hang-out time, then have games and our advancement ceremony to end out the season. This will be our last pack meeting for this season.
If you are interested in going to Summer Camp, please bring a filled out application and your dues to this pack meeting. This will be your LAST CHANCE to sign up for summer camp before we turn in the registration.
Lastly, just because we're getting ready for summer doesn't mean the pack is done. We just take a break so we can take vacations with our families. Keep visiting the blog - I have something special to keep our skills sharp.

March Highlights
Greetings Cubs!

Our last pack meeting was awesome. We practiced our bowline knots and played a rescue game (we'll keep working on that), presented awards to all of our dens, then ended the evening with three arrow of light presentatins, a slide show that made people cry, and bridged 5 of our 2nd year Webelos. It was a joyous/sad time. If you missed the slide show, here it is.
Our next pack meeting will be April 27th at the school.
Also, check out the links on the side. They are for our district/council office and there is a lot of info here about stuff going on that I may have neglected to mention at the Pack meetings.
In closing this entry, I say good-bye to my 2nd year Webelos: Chris, Sage, Ethan, Zakk, and Josh. I'll miss you guys, but will still be around as I help out with the Troop.

Take care.

March Pack Meeting
Greetings Scouts!
The Big Blast was a giant hit. We had 17 families at the launch site, and even though we were somewhat hidden, everybody eventually found us and we all had fun.
The next pack meeting will be March 30th at the school. This meeting's theme will be centered around the 5th grade Webelos bridging into boy scouts. As always, we will have games and activities for everyone, and awards will still be presented for all of the dens. We will be presenting 3 of our Weblos with the Arrow of Light award, then say good-bye to our 5th graders as we end the evening with an emotional slide show and bridging ceremony.
For this evening, all 5th grade Webelos MUST show up in uniform! If you don't show up in uniform, you will NOT participate in the ceremony. You will still bridge, but you won't do it in front of the Pack. I will be sending home letters explaining the details after this week's den meeting.
Have a great week. We'll see you all on the 30th.

Big Blast Rocket Launch
March 14th is our 2009 BIG BLAST! Rocket Launch. We'll be joining the Troop at Lucerne Dry Lake for a day of fun with rockets, tennis balls, dirt, and running around. We'll have contests to see who's rocket goes the highest, farthest, and most original flight path. We've been working hard on our rockets, and they are looking good. Now we'll find out if they fly.
We'll meet at the school parking lot at 8:00 in the morning and plan on leaving by 8:30. Bring water and food, 'cause I won't have any for you. I'll supply the launching pads and bring some extra motors if you want to buy some more. $2 for the C6-5 and $1 for the A3-5.
If you haven't paid for you rocket, yet, get me $8 ASAP. This just covers the cost of the kit and the motors.
For more info, leave a comment or send me an email.
See you at the Big Blast!
