Potato Vine

Greetings, guys.

Well, almost half of our pack was been at day camp all week.  So far Caleb has earned belt loops for BB guns, Archery, Music, Volleyball, Soccer, and Ultimate Frizbee, a pin for Archery and BB guns, and the Forster and Showman activity badge.  So if you didn't go this year, do everything you can to be there next year.

Okay - my plant for this week is something called Potato Vine.  I saw this in the canyon at the top of Hermosa, in my friend's back yard, and all over the place in Big Sur.  Angie finally figured out what it was, but it's been bugging me because I couldn't find it in any of my references, or any of the references I checked on vacation.  The reason it was bothering me is because it has really cool berries on them, and I wanted to know if I could eat them.  Nope - the whole plant is toxic.  So, if you see this one, DONT EAT IT.

Have a good week.  See you all soon.

Hey guys!

Well, I went on vacation with my family last week. We started our vacation by hiking to the top of Mount Baden-Powell. This is a really tough hike, but we all made it, so we should be getting some Broken Arrow awards soon. Then we went to Big Sur in central California. We had a good time exploring the local trails, took a tour of the Big Sur Lightstation, and we caught crawdads. Josh and I ate some of the crawdads. Very yummie.

So here is the 3rd plant for you. this is called Monkey Flower. It grows all over California, and there are several different varieties - I don't know exactly which one this is. There is nothing special about this plant (that I know of), I just think it's pretty. It is also easy to identify in the wild. It has skinny leaves, and usually grows in places where you wouldn't expect to see flowers - like on the side of rock cliffs or in dry dirt areas.

That's what I have for this week. More is coming...

Keep on enjoying summer. Keep doing your best, even at relaxing.
